Staging Your Home

Everyone wishes for a magic formula to stage your home for sale, but I am going to let you in on a little secret … there isn’t any one formula that can make your house sell.

You cannot predict who will buy your house, but you can prepare your house for sale. Popularly called “home staging” you can do it yourself or call in the professionals.

Either way you will want to get rid of any clutter, personal memorabilia and take a good hard look at your surroundings. It can be hard when you are so used to living in a house and getting the objective opinion of a close friend, relative or real estate agent may reveal something you did not notice.

Easy ways to update a room include:

  • A new modern rug
  • bright cushions
  • new duvet in the master bedroom
  • new towels in the bathroom
  • Are your curtains clean and free from any rips or marks? Rails are properly secured and tidy. Remember curtains are usually sold with the house and buyers do take note of these.
  • Ensure there are no dripping taps or wobbly door handles, blown light bulbs etc. If a potential buyer notices these small things they may wonder what other home maintenance may be missed.
  • Clean your oven and cooktop. Give it a good polish. People at open homes do look in the oven and its usually included in the chattels.
  • Similarly clean your mirrors, and give your kitchen and bathroom taps a good polish too. A shining stainless sink has sold many a home.
  • Clean all your door handles, light switches and windows inside and out.
